This referral form is to submit candidate recommendations for the Physician Scientist Development Program (PSDP) and Physician Scientist Scholars Program (PSSP), both supported by the Office of Physician Scientist Education & Training (PSET). This form must be completed by a department chair or other departmental leadership designee. Self-nominations will not be accepted.

The Physician Scientist Development Program (PSDP), led by Robert A. Baiocchi, MD, PhD, is a multi-year program designed to help resident and fellow trainees navigate the complex pathway to becoming a physician scientist.
PSDP Eligibility:
  • Categorical residents in all training programs
  • In first or second year of training
  • Training grant eligible
  • Have protected time for research
  • Approval from department chair and residency/fellowship program director (the form below must be submitted by chair or director)

The Physician Scientist Scholars Program (PSSP), led by Ginny L. Bumgardner, MD, PhD, is a multi-year program tailored to the unique needs of early career faculty physician scientists to support them in gaining independent funding.
PSSP Eligibility:
  • Early career physician scientists (new recruits or current faculty) no more than (2) years out from residency/fellowship training
  • Assistant professor rank; tenure track prioritized
  • Basic translational research with a minimum of 50% research protected time (50+% are prioritized, but those with less rFTE will be considered)
  • Approval from department/division chair and/or other appropriate leadership designee (the form below must be submitted by chair or other leader)

To the department/division chair/leader: Please complete the brief survey below. Upon receipt, someone from the Office of Physician Scientist Education & Training will contact the prospective candidate and your department representative to complete the referral application process.

All candidates for each program will be reviewed by a committee of tenured physician scientists across the College of Medicine. Once the committee finalizes the cohort for each program, a representative from the Office of Physician Scientist Education & Training will follow-up via email with more information.
